Course aims

You will gain an understanding of the underpinning knowledge of the anatomical and physiological changes and considerations relating to ante and post natal women.

You will also learn skills to assess and utilise specialist information about ante and post natal women enabling them to plan, teach and evaluate an exercise session, either group or one to one.

You can be assessed in any discipline for which you hold a recognised qualification at level 2 or 3.

Course format

This is a blended learning course, you study underpinning theory at home in your own time and complete worksheets to check your learning and then attend two days of classroom based theory and practical learning.  It is important that you complete the home study as we will not have time to do more than review it on the course.


Course content

The course covers the exercise implications of pregnancy and the post natal period.  Topics you will cover include:

 * Effects of each trimester of pregnancy on the body

* Benefits and risks of exercise 

* Contra-indications to exercise

Practical application of exercise / activity

* Basic nutrition guidelines for ante natal women

* Session planning/structure of ante/post natal exercise


Case study and programme design: 

This is an externally set case study and learners must complete the case study with a planned programme of exercise for a client in both ante natal and post natal stages.



Programme design for ante natal and post natal clients


Theory paper:

Multiple choice, 30 question paper with a pass mark of 70%.  You will sit this at the end of the practical days.

Suitable for:  Studio or Gym instructors, Pilates instructors and personal trainers who want to work with ante natal and post natal women

Pre-requisite:  Learners must hold a Level 2 Fitness Instructor (Gym, ETM, Aqua, Circuits or Walking), Level 3 Pilates or Yoga or other similar recognised qualification.  A current CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) certificate is also recommended.
