Course aim: to develop the exercise professional's understanding of the benefits, challenges and opportunities for working with clients with mental health conditions and be able to design, deliver, monitor, adapt and reflect on exercise and activity sessions with clients referred with mental health conditions.

Course Structure

The course consists of the following mandatory units:

  1. Overview of a range of mental health conditions, diagnostic criteria and treatment options
  2. Treatments, side effects and implications for exercise
  3. Benefits of and barriers to exercise for different mental health conditions
  4. Client-centred working, roles, responsibilities and boundaries
  5. Motivation and lifestyle behaviour change theories and application
  6. How to plan, deliver and evaluate appropriate physical activity and exercise for adults with different mental health conditions


Experience of working with clients with mental health conditions is necessary.
NOTE: To register with REPs at Level 4 a recognised Level 3 exercise referral qualification is required.
